March 18 - Coast Guard Cutter MackinawThe CGC Mackinaw arrived in Duluth to break up the harbor ice and welcome springtime. For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. March 23- Springtime Departure. The Duluth Shipping Canal is my preferred location to observe marine activity, especially during spring when everything comes back to life after a long winter's nap.The Cason J Callaway makes its way through the Duluth Shipping Canal on a warm March afternoon, offering more proof that the new shipping season is upon us despite the possibility of a few storms and flurries.Evidence is spring's arrival is popping up all around us, and new life is always a refreshing sign. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.Psalm 118:24Today is truly a gift from God; take time to enjoy it!

July 18— Tall Ships - Midsummer often ushers in a majestic flotilla of tall ships into port. These grand sailing vessels, a sight to behold, gather at the Head of the Lakes and embark on a summer of exploration, touring other ports around the Great Lakes."He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!" - Psalm 107:29-30Summers are short in the Northland, so take advantage of every day.

September 12th: An ocean freighter quietly slips through the Duluth Shipping Canal under the watchful gaze of the Inner Breakwall Lighthouse. The damp, moist air is refreshing to the eyes, and the nearby gulls' approving cries add a touch of liveliness to the scene as the incoming boat stirs up fresh fish for breakfast."Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." - Psalm 46:10It is incredible how the providence of God brings all these together for one moment of enjoyment.

Summer sunrises over Lake Superior come in the early hours of 5AM. A trip to the usually cool lakeshore to take in a "Superior Sunrise", makes the loss of sleep, a small price to pay, for the beauty to behold.
