February 9 - Winter ShoresThe beauty of winter is readily apparent along the shore of Lake Superior, and the beach grass along Park Point stands heartily in place throughout the winter season.Amazingly, these plants endure and increase in the harshest climates.May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. Colossians 1:11Much like the tough beach grass, we can travel through life with the assurance that our heavenly Father will sustain us through good times and bad.
The wind blown beached of Park Point on the shores of Lake Superior show the beauty and solitude of the quit season.
February 15 - Fire and Ice Brighton Beach in Duluth is a beautiful place to watch the sunrise, waves, ice, and the big lake. However, by Mid-February, shore ice has formed and begins to break up with warming temperatures. With Springtime drawing closer, the winter landscapes will soon melt into the big lake.So that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy. Psalm 65:8 Thank you, Lord, for giving me a fresh new day every morning.
February 24th - Magenta ShoresThe setting moon slowly descends on the snow-covered shores of Lake Superior. It is a good feeling to see open water after a long winter.Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. December 18th - Snow CoverThe forest around Split Rock Lighthouse became a winter wonderland after a two-foot snowfall blanketed the area during a December storm.Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the soul of his masters. Proverbs 25:13
Waves slap the shoreline of Lake Superior.
July 7 - Fireweed - One of the last wildflowers of the season, fireweed blossoms along many roadsides in the Northland. The name 'fireweed' originates from this plant's fantastic ability to quickly grow back into areas burned by fire. In this photo, fireweed embraces the lichen-covered rocks along the shoreline of Lake Superior.Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Luke 12:27
February 16 - Ice-LandIce shards are continually building and moving along the North Shore of Lake Superior this time of year, forming art formations with their own beauty. How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom, you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number— living things both large and small. Psalm 104:24-25The beauty of God's creation surrounds us. All we have to do is open our eyes and see.
February 5 - Superior WinterThe warm light of a Lake Superior sunrise shines through the ice-covered rocks of the North Shore. The ice field extends 1/2 mile into Lake Superior and is a gallery for reflecting and refracting light throughout the day.The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. Isaiah 9:2Winter is a great time to relax and reflect on where we are going!
Lost Horizon
A fast moving cold front cleared todays snowstorm with below zero temeratures and clearing skies.
October 16 - First Light- Mid-October brings cool temperatures and clear skies to the Lake Superior Region. This October morning, Split Rock Lighthouse stands sentinel over the Lake Superior as it has for over a century. As the eyelids of creation open to a new day, so, a beautiful sunrise resets our view of life and sets us on a firm foundation, much like Split Rock Lighthouse. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5
Rising over Lake Superior in the distance, the sun cast a warm glow over an October landscape.
May 2 - Sunsets over Caribou Lake in Minnesota are a gentle reminder of the beauty in God's creation. As the sky softly shifts from day to night, one can't help but reflect on Psalm 113:3: "From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised." This peaceful transition at the end of the day serves as a moment to appreciate and praise the wonder of His works.
February 25 - Icy SunriseSunrise breaks over sheet ice on the North Shore. With waves rapidly breaking the surface ice on Lake Superior up into shards, the advance of Spring is a sure thing. And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years." Genesis 1:14Spring's new life is a good thought and the "New Life" promised in Jesus Christ is indeed the same promise.
September 17 - September Skies - The Milky Way shines over the North Shore of Lake Superior with the lights of Two Harbors in the background. The Milky Way Galaxy is an incredible work of creation and is home to our earth. The galaxy is 150,000 light-years in diameter. Our Solar System resides roughly 27,000 light-years away from the Galactic Center, on the inner edge of one of the spiral-shaped concentrations of gas and dust particles called the Orion Arm.When I look up into the nighttime September skies, the work of God's creation is apparent and humbling. God's Glory: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day, they pour forth speech; night after night, they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. (Ps. 19:1-4)
January 9 - Frosty ForestAfter three days of freezing fog, the forests across the Northland became covered with rime ice.Rime ice forms when supercooled water liquid droplets freeze onto surfaces. The incredible beauty caught everyone's attention.God seems to gently "breathe" on the earth as it becomes covered with frost. Then, when daylight breaks and the curtain of freezing clouds lifts off the landscape, the wonder of God's creation reveals His Glory for our pleasure. He gives snow like wool;He scatters the frost like ashes. Psalm 147:16

As the shorter days of September creep across the calendar, and the memory of warm summer days fade into our memories, the beauty of creation remains to be enjoyed in the calm waters of a quiet sunset on Caribou Lake.Much like a painting reveals the personality of the artist, so, nature reveals the God of the universe.
January 29 - Moonshine at Gooseberry FallsFrozen waterfalls at Gooseberry Falls State Park look much different, bathed in the moonlight of a full January moon. The evening's quiet is broken only by an occasional owl hoot and the muted bubbling of the Gooseberry river still moving under the ice and snow.He reveals deep and hidden things;he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.Daniel 2:22What you see when you walk outside under the light of a full moon is incredible.outside under the light of a full moon.
Hidden away at the bottom of a large hill in near the Tower-Soudan State Park, sits a long row of 142 corrugated metal boathouses that line the shore of Stuntz Bay on Lake Vermilion’s south shore to form the historical Stuntz Bay Boathouse District. Constructed between 1900 and 1955, the boathouses were offered by the Oliver Mining Company as an incentive for their workers, rewarding their employees for their commitment to the company and providing the opportunity for recreation and appreciation for the surrounding natural resources. Some of the mining company's top-level employees used the boathouses to get to island properties, said Nancy Larson, secretary of the Stuntz Bay Association. The structures are each unique and have collectively been placed on the National Register for their connection to the local iron mines. Located on state land below the Soudan Mine, the buildings and boat launch are privately owned.

High water flow in the St Louis River is making for some spectacular autumn pictures this year.
October 11 - First SnowAs the first snow of the season blanketed the Northland, I couldn't help but notice a vibrant red maple leaf that had fallen and was now embedded in the snow. It stood out against the white backdrop, a symbol of the changing season. The leaf was a reminder that as the trees shed their leaves and the temperature drops, winter is just around the corner. Despite the cold, there was a certain beauty in the contrast of the bright red leaf against the freshly fallen snow, making for a picturesque scene. And the seasons come and go, and so do the photo opportunities of life here in the Northland."For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted" Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
